Three years ago, Cooper Hewitt closed for a massive renovation and when it reopened on December 12, 2014 I was there to celebrate the opening and also to check on and admire three of our own designs in the new and fabulous SHOP Cooper Hewitt.
You may have heard that the new Cooper Hewitt has touch-screen tables, an interactive Immersion Room, and a special pen that will allow museum goers to virtually collect items during their visit. But what it also has are lots and lots of fascinating, three-dimensional objects. The renovated museum now has four floors of galleries and sixty per cent more exhibition space.
In the second-floor gallery is a white display case fitted out with three hundred and fifty items from the museum’s permanent collection. These are arranged by loose, suggestive themes such as “Color” and “Line,” juxtaposing industrial design, fashion, graphics, and tableware from many decades.
Here are a few pictures of our favorites items from the collection, a few pictures from the opening and a peak at the three Smilow Design Objects you will find for sale in the gift shop SHOPCooperHewitt.
