Smilow® Furniture Does Last a Lifetime

From the genesis of Smilow® Furniture in 1949, the aim was to design and build midcentury modern furniture that were “Enduring Modern Classics”.

Well, it’s always great when there is proof of this motto. We were contacted this month by a Dutch family who furnished their entire White Plains, NY home with Smilow Furniture in the 70s. The original furniture is still used and continues to be cherished.

They invited us into their home to see how well the furniture held up over the decades.

The daughter remembers,

“As a young teen, I recall going many times to your Dad’s White Plains store with my parents. Even though it took a while to find their dream house, they always knew it would be filled with Mr. Smilow’s furniture. This happened in 1970 … Mom and Dad bought a house. Every room was filled with this beautiful furniture. A couple years later when my Grandmother moved back to New York from Amsterdam, her apartment was filled with the same furniture.”

2015 winner of the Grateful American Book Prize is receiving new recognition

WASHINGTON, DC, June 16 – The winner of the 2015 Grateful American Book Prize, Like a River: A Civil War Novel, is garnering new acclaim. The book and its author, Kathy Cannon Wiechman, are finalists for the Ohioana Book Award, the Maine Student Book Award, and it has been nominated for the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award in Vermont.

Ms. Wiechman said that she is a proud daughter of Ohio to have been chosen as a finalist for the Ohioana award. She added that the Dorothy Canfield Fisher and Maine Student Book awards put an emphasis on the study of history among America’s young readers. “The Grateful American Book Prize was a huge honor for me, and now having Like a River acknowledged by others allows me to believe that an interest in history in our schools and libraries does exist. I sincerely hope it continues and grows.”

The Grateful American Book Prize is the first of its kind competition for historically accurate books of fiction and non-fiction for young readers focused on the events and personalities that have shaped the United States. Prize judges are in the midst of evaluating entries for the 2016 Prize. Submissions for this year’s award are being accepted through July 31, 2016.

Sustainable: Smilow furniture is a proud member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council. It is mindful about manufacturing and distributing its furniture in ways that protect and preserve the planet.

About Smilow Furniture. An authentic midcentury brand handcrafted in America, Smilow Furniture thrived from 1949 to the late 70s. Mel Smilow (1922-2002) was sole designer of the collection, which he retailed through six independently-owned stores. Industrial designer Judy Smilow, his daughter, brought the company back to market in 2012, reissuing a curated selection of the originals, and occasionally updating materials and palette for a new century.
